I’ll definitely have to remember this one ….
But before then here’s my 2p worth as an ex-sound tech and now moved on to other things with (in?) God. Other item to clarify – I’m also the father of a profoundly deaf 20yr old so I’ve made finding out about sound a high priority.
So how loud is too loud? Well anything over 85db may not be considered loud but the human body, specifically hearing, starts to fail at this level and it is an accepted medical opinion that >85db causes or can lead to deafness.
Yes loud is a perception. But equally the misguided perception of the sound tech that this week is no louder than last is usually wrong – especially if you have no quantifiable measuring method.
Next, if you do measure, where od you measure? Accepted wisdom is 1m from the sound source and not the sound desk which is typically several orders of manitude further away and sound levels consequently have dropped significantly.
And lets face it – do we need our worship services to be like a rock concert? The real answer is that no we don’t – but whether the musos and techs accept this is another thing altogether.
