Five Things I’d Say to Young Sound Engineers Pt. 5

Today wraps up our series of advice for young sound engineers. I put all this out there, not as someone who has attained perfection, but as a soon-to-be (and maybe is already) “old soundguy,” and as someone who has learned a few things along the way. Moreover, I wish someone had taken the time to [...]

Worship Leaders, You’re Killing Us

I’ve written a guest post for a site called Musicademy today. The site is based in the UK and is an excellent resource for worship leaders. If you’re a techie, I’d still encourage you to check it out. Something that’s been on my heart lately is that both techies and musicians need to spend more [...]

For the last two days, we’ve been talking about advice to young sound engineers. For review, the first two points were: #1: You Don’t Know as Much as You Think You Do and #2: Attitude is More Important than the Mix Today we’ll continue with… #3: Don’t Be Afraid To Say, “I’ve Made A Mistake” [...]

Yesterday began a new series that falls loosely in the category of advice for young sound engineers. The first point was, You Don’t Know as Much as You Think You Do. Today, we’ll build on that. #2: Attitude Is More Important Than The Mix Demonstrating a servant’s hear  and going out of your way to [...]

Five Things I’d Say to Young Sound Engineers Pt. 1

Chris Huff at Behind the Mixer wrote an interesting post last week. He wrote about how musicians see sound techs. It’s a good, enlightening and sometimes hard read. I recommend it. One of the comments that really got me was this one: Do you give suggestions to the sound tech? – All the time and [...]

Drum Condo Update

Since many people have been asking, I finally did get around to snapping some more pictures, including the inside. I also took some SPL readings to confirm what I suspected. First, hard data. I walked inside the condo and had Joe play at his normal volume. We got readings around 116-118 dB SPL, C-weighted, fast. [...]

Drum Mic’ing Webinar Recording

It’s here…by popular demand! We had a great time the other night with Jason Cole, Dave Stagl and myself talking about drum mic’ing and how to do it better. Thanks to the MacHeist bundle, I recorded the conversation, and it’s presented here pretty much in it’s entirely. I say “pretty much” because there were a few [...]

Equipment List

Since I’ve received several comments on recent posts that start with, “Is that a [fill in the blank]?,” I thought I’d run down the list of  equipment we put in our new worship space. Almost all of it is new, since we came from another church that had a pretty complete, though not very good, A/V [...]

First Round of Troubleshooting

You finally made it. After working 15 hour days for a week, the system is installed. The band arrives and soundcheck begins. You’re excited because you installed an Aviom system, and setting up monitors should be a breeze (mainly because you don’t have to do it!). You call for the kick drum, dial up the [...]

So maybe my previous post about the RSS V-Mixing system Personal Mixer was a bit premature. However, on Monday, it hit RSS’ website, and is now officially announced. And honestly, it looks better than I expected.  As I’ve written previously, the main limitation of the Aviom is 16 channels. The M-48 gets around this by [...]
