Stage Set Ideas

Roofing Material Set

This set was created by making a frame of 2x6s painted black, then weaving translucent corrugated roofing materials. Some of the panels are in front of the frame, others are on the backside. We placed lights on the cross pieces (simple hardware store utility reflector lights with colored bulbs), to give various up- and down lighting effects. The whole thing cost a few hundred bucks and had a great look.

We attached the panels with a staple gun, but I would recommend something more substantial like drywall screws, as the panels were occasionally bumped off by people entering or exiting the stage.

Whtie Set Yellow Light

This set is constructed of a white, veil-like fabric (which was treated with a fire retarding coating), and foam insulation board, cut and painted to look like rocks. Again, by using a variety of up and down lighting colors, we can achieve a wide variety of looks.

We also have a series of wall washer lights behind the fabric to light up the back wall, so there are a lot of layers of lighting at the lighting tech's disposal.

1 Peter 2:5 provides the inspiration for the set, "You also, like living stones are being built into a spiritual house..." We are the living stones, carefully chosen and being built together, while the three flowing translucent panes remind us of the triune God--Father, Son and Holy Spirit--constantly at work in and through us.

Christmas Set 2

This was a set designed for our Christmas program (obviously). The "houses" are 2" rigid foam insulation, cut and painted. They were set a foot or so off the back wall so we could light behind them. The fram is the same frame in the set with the roofing panels, only with some "snow" on it. The idea is to create a window looking out to a small town.

The Christmas tree was a great idea, but because it was so big, it caused us quite a few problems with getting everything on stage. It's actually on a riser that's about 8" high. The "trees" behind the window frame are 1" foam. The only issue with those is because they had "branches" that stuck out, we kept hitting them and breaking them off. More than a few were held on with drywall screws by the time it came down! This was a great set, the set crew did a fantastic job (I had nothing to do with it).
